For Schools & Colleges

The School of Mathematics works closely with School & College students, teachers and careers advisers to encourage pursuit of Mathematics in higher education.  We also offer advice on aspects of the admissions process to our degrees and studying at the University of Birmingham.

We wish to support young people, to fulfil their potential and progress to University, and teachers, to help their students to fulfil that potential.  To this end, the School & the University, have a range of outreach activities that involve campus tours, school visits and an annual Teachers Conference.

The School of Mathematics is home to the Higher Education Academy Centre for the Mathematics, Statistics & Operations Research (MSOR) Network and the HEFCE funded More Maths Grads project.  Both these projects are geared towards making mathematics more accessible to everyone.

Activities for Students & Teachers

Ongoing/Future Activities

  • Every September, the School hosts the LMS Popular Lectures, which are aimed at students in Years 11-13, but can be suitable for exceptional Year 10 students.
  • Specialist College Status:  we are a partner institution for schools and colleges applying for specialist college status in mathematics and are very happy to support further bids
  • Work Experience & Student Shadowing:  the School gives students a taste of university life.

Master Classes

Master Classes are designed to enhance and extend students understanding of a chosen topic of mathematics.

The School, in conjunction with the Excellence in Cities initiative and the University Outreach Programme, runs a series of master classes for Year 11 & 12 pupils.  Also, for the latter part of this year, we are also running a series of master classes on Saturday mornings for gifted and talented Year 10 students. This has been made possible by a donation from Ms Nancy Blachman (a former student of this School).

Year 10 Mathematics Festival

This event is possible due to the generous donation from Ms. Nancy Blachman, an alumna of our School.

The 2009 Year 10 Mathematics Celebration took place in the Avon Room on 17 September 2009 and was a great success with over 500 students and teachers joining us.

Our inaugural Festival, held in September 2008, involved almost 200 students from 34 schools. Students participated in teams of 8 (four students from one school and four from a different school) and worked together and help each other to solve challenging problems.  Everyone worked very hard all day, and we want to congratulate all of them for their achievements.

If you are interested in attending the next Mathematics Festival or would like further details then please contact: liaison@maths.bham.ac.uk
