About us

Currently, the School is one of the largest Mathematics departments in the UK with approximately 50 academic staff, 600 undergraduate students and 50 postgraduate students. 

In the last five years, the School:

  • continuously meets University targets for undergraduate student numbers;
  • offers a wide range of courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students with supervision provided for all their time here;
  • opened, in October 2008, the School Library - an extension to the facilities available in the Maths Learning Resource Centre, providing both computing & study space;
  •  joined, in September 2007, the Mathematics Access Grid (MAGIC) to deliver high level courses to postgraduate students using interactive video conferencing;
  • opened, in October 2006, a Maths Learning Resource Centre for all undergraduate students;
  • is the national headquarters for the Maths, Stats & OR Network (MSOR), a subject centre of the Higher Education Academy;
  • has increased graduate student numbers through the Graduate School in Mathematics;
  • is increasing funding for all its research activities, leading to further research fellow appointments;
  • continues to build and expand its existing research interests through appointments of internationally distinguished academic staff.
